The quick answer
Progression is several linked tracks: character and Solo Mode advancement open gates, Martial Arts and Inner Ways develop your build, gear improves its stats, and exploration supplies additional rewards and abilities. When progress stops, identify the blocked track before earning more of the wrong resource.

The progression tracks at a glance
| Track | What to inspect | Typical next action |
|---|---|---|
| Character and Solo Mode | Level, breakthrough requirements and story gates | Complete the listed advancement requirement. |
| Martial Arts | Level and breakthrough of each equipped style | Upgrade the style you actually use. |
| Inner Ways | Equipped passives and next-tier effects | Acquire the relevant upgrade material. |
| Gear | Item tier, slot enhancement and build fit | Replace a weak piece or improve its slot. |
| Exploration | Regional rewards, Oddities and exploration skills | Claim earned rewards or target a useful unlock. |
A level gate is different from a materials shortage
Character advancement can pause at a breakthrough requirement. Look at the Solo Mode advancement screen when the next upgrade asks for a higher stage. More ordinary experience is not a substitute for completing a listed breakthrough condition.
A material shortage is a different problem. Open the missing item from the upgrade screen, inspect its acquisition routes, and choose an available source. Before committing a session, confirm that the activity rewards the exact tier and item you need. Similar icons do not guarantee interchangeable materials.
At a level cap, extra EXP can enter Stored EXP instead of raising your visible level. Open the three-dot menu beside the EXP bar and inspect Level & EXP, then use Solo Mode → Upgrade to check the breakthrough. Stored EXP is drawn down as you earn further EXP after the cap rises; it is not a button that skips an unmet challenge or timer.
Improve the build you have equipped
Treat your active build as a small project. Write down its two Martial Arts, the job of each one, the Inner Ways that support them, and the gear bonuses you are trying to maintain. This makes a weak link visible: an undeveloped secondary art, a passive with an unused trigger, or an equipment slot left behind.
The Arsenal is another gear-related system, using stored equipment to contribute bonuses. Once it is available, inspect its Path and stored pieces before assuming spare gear has no use. It is a separate check from the items currently worn by your character.
Choose the next session by the obstacle
- If a feature is locked, follow its level, quest or breakthrough requirement.
- If a fight is too punishing, identify the attack killing you and review defensive timing alongside gear.
- If damage feels low, check the active Martial Arts, passives and gear together before chasing a larger score.
- If exploration is blocked, inspect the required interaction, skill or quest condition.
- If everything works, advance the story or pursue the activity you actually enjoy.
Avoid upgrading without a stopping point
A useful target is concrete: unlock the next tier of an equipped art, complete a gear set bonus, or acquire the exploration ability needed for a route. “Raise everything” has no clear finish and encourages spending on systems you are not using.
After an upgrade, repeat the same encounter or practice sequence. If the problem was running out of Endurance, a small attack increase may not solve it. Keep the result and the requirement separate: access checks, displayed power and actual combat performance answer different questions.

Common questions
Is Martial Mastery my character level?
No. Character level and Martial Mastery describe different things. Use the level and breakthrough screens for access requirements, and the development breakdown to investigate the build behind your Mastery score.
Does being capped mean all further experience is wasted?
No. The stored-experience system lets excess EXP accumulate for later levelling. Check the Level & EXP panel and the next breakthrough requirement. Continue useful quests or exploration, but do not expect extra grinding to bypass a locked advancement stage.
