Level cap and Breakthrough: why you cannot level up

Find the Solo Mode Breakthrough requirement, distinguish time gates from trials and understand what happens to stored EXP.

The quick answer

Open Solo Mode → Upgrade and read the next Breakthrough requirement. A full EXP bar can mean you need to clear a trial or wait for a progression gate. Additional EXP can be stored while capped, but grinding more enemies will not replace the missing requirement.

Most likely cause: a cap rather than missing EXP

Character EXP and Solo Mode progression are related but different. Your ordinary level can reach the ceiling allowed by your current Solo Mode tier. At that point, the question changes from “where do I earn EXP?” to “what opens the next tier?”

Check the exact wording beside Upgrade. A challenge requirement needs action; a countdown needs time. If both are present, completing the challenge does not necessarily remove the time restriction. Read the remaining condition after each step instead of assuming the first completed objective resolves the entire gate.

Find the requirements in the right menu

  1. Open the main menu and choose Solo Mode, using Mode Switch if you are viewing another mode.
  2. Select Upgrade to inspect the next Breakthrough and its requirements.
  3. Check whether the character-level requirement is met.
  4. Look for a trial entry, challenge objective or unlock countdown.
  5. Inspect Rewards Overview separately so you can collect any earned progression rewards.

Do not confuse a locked Martial Art talent with a new character level. The talent may name a required Solo Mode tier. In that case, repeatedly upgrading the weapon’s current rank is not the same as meeting the account progression requirement.

If the Breakthrough trial is available

Load the equipment and Martial Arts you intend to fight with before entering. A saved alternative loadout can make your character weaker than expected even when stronger gear exists in your bag. Check your active Inner Ways and carried medicine as well.

Use a failed attempt to identify one cause. If you survive but miss a timer, improve damage uptime and the active damage tracks. If you die early, practise the attack that catches you and review defensive resources. A larger displayed score is not a substitute for responding to the trial’s actual mechanic.

What stored EXP does and does not do

EXP earned while capped can be placed in storage. Once the gate opens, later EXP gains can draw on that reserve. Do not expect the entire stored amount to turn into levels immediately when you press Upgrade, and do not treat storage as permission to skip the trial.

A sensible capped session still has several useful options: finish an unlock quest, activate travel points, collect a needed exploration reward or practise an unfamiliar encounter. If your only goal is the next level, further grinding may be a poor use of that session compared with completing its blocker.

If the menu still will not advance

What you seeNext check
Countdown remainsWait for the displayed unlock; changing the world clock will not advance a real timer.

All listed conditions appear completeReopen the menu and relog once; record the exact requirement text if it remains stuck.

For a persistent mismatch, include the character level, Solo Mode tier, region and screenshot of the disabled action in a support report. That is much more useful than “levelling is broken” and avoids unnecessary account changes.

Common questions

Is stored EXP wasted?

It is retained for later recovery, subject to the game’s storage and release rules. It does not remove a progression gate.

Can I fix a cap by changing difficulty?

Difficulty selection and Solo Mode Breakthrough are different settings. Complete the requirement shown under Solo Mode → Upgrade.
