The quick answer
Bitter Seasons is found in the secret room after Void King during Gleaming Abyss. Finish the fight, continue to the reward room and collect the Inner Way instead of leaving immediately.

Reach the room after the boss
Follow Gleaming Abyss through Mistveil Forest to the Void King encounter. The important distinction is the reward’s placement: Bitter Seasons is in the post-boss secret room, so defeating the boss and immediately teleporting away can leave the acquisition unfinished.
After the fight, inspect the onward route and collect the room’s loot. Check the obtained item’s name, then open Inner Ways and Comprehend it. If you have already cleared the encounter, investigate the uncollected room before assuming the reward was lost or that you need a different boss.
What Bitter Seasons contributes
The passive applies a poison-related effect that can reduce physical defence through its stacking interaction. It is a different mechanic from Strategic Sword’s Bleed. Sharing a damage-over-time theme does not make the two effects interchangeable.
Read the learned tier’s trigger and stack rules before evaluating it. A short fight, a fresh target and a sustained boss window are different conditions for a stacking passive.
Judge it in the context of your attacks
A defence-reduction effect is most relevant when the damage you deliver benefits from that reduction. Start by identifying the attacks that make up your useful damage window. Do not select the passive solely because a general build list places it beside several unrelated weapons.
For a proposed comparison, use the same enemy and difficulty, repeat the same short sequence and look for the condition first. Only after confirming activation should you compare results over multiple attempts. Random critical and affinity outcomes make a single number unreliable.
Handle target changes deliberately
Stacking effects need time on the target they affect. In a fight with several enemies, rapidly switching focus may prevent one target from receiving the sustained pressure you expected. In a boss encounter, an invulnerable phase can interrupt the practical value of an otherwise useful setup.
This does not mean you should ignore priority adds or keep attacking into danger. It means the passive’s theoretical sustained value should not decide your target selection by itself.
Troubleshoot in the right order
| Problem | Action |
|---|---|
| Boss defeated but art missing | Inspect the post-boss secret room |
| Reward collected but art locked | Check Comprehend in Inner Ways |
| Learned with no combat effect | Check active equipped slots and trigger |
| Different damage from a build example | Compare tier, target and time spent building the effect |
| Expecting Bleed behaviour | Separate poison and defence reduction from the sword’s Bleed loop |
Decide whether to upgrade
Once acquisition and activation work, compare the next tier with your Path’s core passive. A general offensive option can be useful, but it should not displace an interaction needed to make the weapon function. Spend with a specific expected change in mind, then confirm that change in the same encounter.
