Stormbreaker Spear: taunt, Drumbeat and tank positioning

Use Storm Roar, Thunder Shock and Fury Spear’s Drumbeat to manage Stormbreaker Spear’s defensive loop.

The quick answer

Stormbreaker Spear is the defensive Stonesplit Might spear. Storm Roar handles enemy attention, Thunder Shock spends Fighting Spirit, and Fury Spear’s final strike supplies Drumbeat.

Claim and identify the defensive spear

Check your early in-game mail for the Stormbreaker Spear reward associated with the Raging Tides General. If you already claimed it, look in Martial Arts before searching for another item. A learned style and a spear equipment drop are separate things.

Confirm that your active skill is Storm Roar. Nameless Spear and Heavenquaker Spear are different Martial Arts, even when the equipment model looks similar. This guide concerns tank tools and the Thundercry pairing rather than Bleed or the Nameless spinning sequence.

Give each skill a clear job

Storm Roar taunts nearby enemies and supplies defensive effects. Thunder Shock spends Fighting Spirit on its attack and vulnerability effect. Fury Spear is the charged attack whose final hit provides Drumbeat. Drumbeat can then support Thundercry Blade's conditional Martial Art interaction.

Do not judge the last step by animation alone. If you cancel before Fury Spear's finishing hit, you may not have established the state you wanted. Watch for the buff before swapping and compare successful versus interrupted attempts.

Position enemies for the group

In a group, your useful position is not always directly beside another player. Our recommendation is to keep the enemy's dangerous facing predictable and avoid dragging it through the party while chasing a personal attack. After a taunt, settle into a place where allies can continue their own actions safely.

This is encounter advice, not a promise that every boss attack obeys taunt. Scripted mechanics can still choose another player or an arena location. Watch the actual tell and respond rather than trying to solve every mechanic by taunting again.

Learn the paired sequence in small pieces

  1. Use the spear alone until you can recognise its resource spending and Fury Spear's final strike.
  2. Establish Drumbeat and swap to Thundercry Blade.
  3. Inspect the blade's available Martial Art response.
  4. Practise the sequence during a safe enemy recovery.
  5. Shorten or abandon it when a defensive action is required.

This drill teaches the dependency. It is not a benchmarked raid rotation and should not override a mechanic that requires immediate movement. A tank who completes every charge but repeatedly puts allies in danger has not improved the group's run.

Resource and timing problems

SymptomCheck
Thunder Shock unavailableAvailable Fighting Spirit and the active Martial Art
No Drumbeat after a chargeWhether Fury Spear's final strike completed
Partner skill stays ordinaryWhether Drumbeat was active when you used it
Enemy still hits someone elseWhether the attack is scripted or you are outside useful range

Fortitude is not a substitute for understanding an attack. Preserve a defensive response and avoid testing an unfamiliar gold attack while committed to a long animation.

How to assess improvement

Review one encounter at a time. Did the enemy stay in a useful position? Did you retain resources for the important moment? Did your weapon swap produce the intended conditional action? Those observations give you a better starting point than copying a gear set before you can reproduce the basic sequence.

For solo exploration, the same tools can provide control and survival, but the group-facing positioning priorities change. Adjust your decisions to the activity instead of expecting one fixed opener to solve everything.
