The quick answer

A Martial Art is the fighting style used with a weapon type: its attacks, skills and development. It is separate from the weapon item in your inventory. Learn the style, equip it, and upgrade that specific art; owning a better weapon does not automatically develop its techniques.

Weapon type, Martial Art and gear are different layers

LayerExampleWhat it determines
Weapon typeSwordThe broad equipment and moveset family.
Martial ArtNameless Sword or Strategic SwordThe particular style and its skills.
Gear itemThe sword equipped in your gear slotEquipment attributes and bonuses.

Two styles can share a weapon type without sharing their development. When an upgrade seems to have no effect, check the name of the equipped Martial Art against the one you improved. This is especially easy to miss when you experiment with another style using familiar equipment.

Learn a style through its acquisition route

Open the Martial Art entry and inspect how it is obtained. Routes vary: progression rewards, sect-related access and Skill Theft are among the ways styles are learned. Skill Theft involves finding and observing the relevant practitioner; it is a separate activity from looting a weapon.

Track the route from the entry you actually want. A guide for another sword or fan style can take you to the wrong location even though the weapon icon looks familiar. If a route is unavailable, read its prerequisites before assuming membership in a sect is the only option.

For a Sanctum route, check whether you need a Dragon Key and the relevant Skill Theft or stealth introduction before travelling. These are access requirements, separate from the later observation challenge and from levelling the art after learning it. A key alone does not replace the quest steps.

Read a new kit in a useful order

  1. Identify its ordinary attacks and a short sequence you can perform consistently.
  2. Read the Martial Art Skill and Special Skill, noting their costs and conditions.
  3. Find any resource or state the style builds and spends.
  4. Read the charged attacks and follow-ups that use that state.
  5. Check how its intended partner contributes before practising a longer sequence.

This order gives each button a job. Instead of memorising a long string immediately, practise reaching one useful state and spending it correctly. Add weapon switching when you understand what you are carrying into the second half of the sequence.

A current example of why wording matters: the September 16 notes corrected Nameless Sword’s Sword Energy description. Its per-stack damage boost against non-player targets does not require the target to be Exhausted. That correction was to the description, not a new effect. Do not build a rotation around a condition from an outdated tooltip.

Develop the style you intend to keep using

Upgrade the selected art through its own development screen, then read the next breakthrough rather than assuming it is only a numerical increase. Keep your secondary art in view too: a pair can feel awkward when the supporting half has fallen behind.

Use the Path Tutorial where available before a major investment. The official May development update added these tutorials specifically to teach Path features and basic combinations. If you later change direction, inspect the current reset preview and its resource returns rather than relying on an old refund claim.

A simple practice test for a new style

Choose an ordinary encounter and perform three deliberate attempts. First, use only short attacks and defence. Second, add the core skill or resource cycle. Third, add the partner art. If the third attempt is worse, identify the exact swap or long animation causing trouble instead of buying more upgrades immediately.

Keep a style if you enjoy its rhythm and can explain its main decisions. A popular build you cannot execute comfortably may be less useful for your immediate progress than a simpler pair you understand. Competitive ranking is a separate question requiring current, mode-specific evidence.

Common questions

Does joining a sect permanently choose my combat class?

Sect membership and your equipped Martial Arts are separate systems. Check each art’s acquisition route and each sect’s rules; do not treat a membership choice as an irreversible character class.
