The quick answer

Open Appearance → Mount, select a horse and inspect How to Obtain. Eligible horses offer capture or snatch routes. For a wild horse, approach from behind until Capture Horse appears, then complete the directional prompts and select the unlocked mount.

Let the mount entry show you the acquisition route

Open the mount collection from Appearance and choose the horse you want. How to Obtain distinguishes horses available through capture or snatching from shop or event mounts. Use the offered map route for an eligible horse instead of assuming every animal model is capturable.

For an early mount, the story and encounters around the opening settlements introduce ridden horses as well. If a Snatch Horse prompt appears, that is a different interaction from taming a wild horse.

Capture a wild horse without startling it

  1. Travel to the location shown by the chosen horse’s acquisition entry.
  2. Approach an eligible wild horse from behind.
  3. Wait for Capture Horse and use the displayed interaction.
  4. Match the directional prompts during the taming sequence.
  5. Finish the sequence, check the collection unlock and select the mount.

If the prompt does not appear, check whether the horse is eligible and whether it has noticed your approach. Pressing the mount-summon key beside a wild horse will not start a capture.

During the minigame, concentrate on the current prompt. Trying to anticipate a memorised sequence can produce the wrong direction if your next prompt differs.

Snatching a ridden horse can start a fight

Some encounters offer Snatch Horse on a mounted NPC. Use that prompt only when it is actually available. Taking the horse can make the rider hostile, so be ready to move away or handle the encounter afterward.

Capture and snatch are acquisition methods, not universal commands that work on every horse in the world. The selected mount’s How to Obtain panel is the useful check when you are hunting a particular appearance.

Select the unlocked mount before summoning

After acquisition, open the collection and make the horse your selected mount. Use the mount input shown in your controls. If the horse is unlocked but a different one appears, check the active selection rather than repeating the capture.

A mount can be unavailable in restricted spaces or activities. Move back into open terrain before treating that message as a missing unlock. Owning a ground mount also does not unlock lightness flight.

Choose a travel method for the route

Use the horse for a continuous stretch of open ground, a Boundary Stone for a long return journey and flight where it is permitted. Dismount when you need a precise interaction around a small object or crowded NPC group. This keeps the mount useful without turning every short objective into a control problem.

Common questions

Can every horse be captured?

No. Use the chosen mount’s How to Obtain entry and look for an actual capture or snatch interaction.

Do I need to buy a mount with real money?
