The quick answer
Talk to Xiangpu at Qingshou Hall in the Kaifeng Imperial Palace and open the storybook. Finish the Grandmaster’s rescue first, then the rewritten Yingying rescue. In the second story, evade the ghost through the lake, use the onion, shoot the powder kegs and cage rope, and activate the cage switch on the left.

Find Xiangpu and open the storybook
At Qingshou Hall, speak to Xiangpu and interact with the nearby book. The first telling gives the Grandmaster the rescue role; the second reverses it. The restart between them is part of the quest, not evidence that your progress was erased.
Complete the Grandmaster’s rescue
- Choose the response that has Yingying accompany the Grandmaster.
- Jump to the far side of the locked door and open it from inside.
- Defeat the guards along the route.
- Perform the prompted Horse Stance beside Yingying.
- Continue through the carrying sequence until the narrator interrupts and the story is rewritten.
For the door, look for a route over the obstruction before searching for a key. For the stance, stand at the prompted spot beside Yingying and complete the interaction.
Complete Yingying’s rescue
- Wait inside the room until the patrolling guard passes, then move out.
- At the lakeside ghost, enter the water, let it pass and cross using the boat.
- Use the onion interaction to drive the ghost away.
- Follow the tunnel and navigate the bomb section.
- Pick up the bow and shoot the powder kegs.
- Shoot the rope holding the cage, then use the switch on the left to open it.
- Operate the crossbow against the pursuers.
- Take the offered digging tool and dig the escape route.
Lowering the cage and unlocking it are separate steps. If the Grandmaster remains trapped after the rope is cut, inspect the left switch instead of firing repeatedly at the cage.
Return to Xiangpu and finish the final telling
After the escape, listen to Xiangpu’s thoughts and watch the completed version of Yingying’s story. The reward bundle includes the Drafting a Heroic Tale inscription and the quest book. Finish those closing interactions before leaving Qingshou Hall.
If you are stuck, identify which story version is active first. The first route uses the door and Horse Stance; the second uses stealth, the onion and ranged puzzle interactions. Applying a step from the other version will not advance the current scene.

Common questions
Why does Yingying’s story restart?
The quest deliberately rewrites the original rescue with Yingying as the rescuer. Complete both storybook parts and the closing conversation.
How do I open the cage in Yingying’s Clever Escape?
Shoot its supporting rope, then activate the switch on the left. Dropping the cage alone does not unlock it.
