This is a timed card contest. Do not assume the opponent will wait while you study your whole hand. Read unfamiliar card descriptions before challenging a difficult opponent, and start with a manageable practice debate.
A practical plan for the first few debates
Begin by identifying one affordable attack and one defensive or recovery option. Use an effect only when you understand what it buys: direct damage, a stronger later card or time to recover. Spending all your Inspiration immediately can leave you unable to respond to pressure.
When your Mental Focus is low, compare the likely finish with the likely incoming damage. A small attack is poor value if the opponent survives and defeats you before your next action. Conversely, repeatedly defending when one attack would end the debate wastes the opening.
These are learning priorities, not a fixed winning sequence. Your available cards, style and opponent change the right play.
Choose a style and develop the career
Scholar offers debate styles with different card behaviour, including Bluster, Rebuttal, Provocation and Filibuster. Inspect the opponent and the style descriptions before entering. Learn one style’s resource loop first, then compare another using similar opponents.
Career progression and mastery expand what you can do; they are separate from your weapon’s combat mastery. After a successful debate, check the Scholar page for completed objectives and available upgrades rather than assuming the rewards applied to your combat build.
Diagnose a loss before repeating it
