The quick answer
Unlock Disguise through Wuyan’s Veil of Love quest in Kaifeng. Draw the required mask-marked NPC, finish the portrait and return to Wuyan to apply it. Owning the portrait alone does not put the disguise on.

Find Wuyan’s shop
Go to Lin’s Cosmetics Shop near the East Cross Street Boundary Stone in Kaifeng and look in its inner room for Wuyan. Start Disguise: Veil of Love and finish the opening conversation.
Disguise changes how you impersonate a quest character. Appearance customisation changes your own normal look. Buying a similar outfit from the wardrobe does not replace the required identity.
Complete the first disguise lesson
- Follow Wuyan’s request involving Qiao Sanlang. Inspect him with Wind Sense and attempt the requested item interaction.
- Return after the initial refusal to learn why a portrait is needed.
- Find Fang Wenxiu at the quest marker and use the drawing prompt associated with the mask icon.
- Complete the portrait, then choose Head to Disguise or return to Wuyan manually.
- Apply Fang Wenxiu’s disguise and repeat Qiao Sanlang’s Jade Sachet request.
- Use the quest item as directed and report back to Wuyan to complete the lesson.
That first refusal is part of the tutorial. Repeating the same request in your normal appearance is not the next step.
Make another usable portrait
Look for the mask icon on an eligible NPC. Stand at a distance where the drawing prompt accepts the target, enter painting mode and follow its prompts. Use the final completion button; walking away midway does not finish the portrait.
At Wuyan, choose Put on a Disguise and select the required recorded identity. Review the Commerce Coin cost and any target requirement before applying it. Then travel to the quest interaction while that identity is active.
If the impersonation is not working

Do not assume a disguise makes every hostile action consequence-free. Follow the specific quest’s approach and keep the identity active until its required conversation or pickup is complete.
